QGH Tobacco and Smoke-free Program

QGH Tobacco and Smoke-free Program

The Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH) is implementing a Tobacco and Smoke-Free Grounds initiative to support the health and well-being of Nunavummiut and protect patients, visitors and staff from exposure to second-hand smoke.

Starting June 30, all staff, patients and visitors who smoke or use tobacco products will need to use the designated area at QGH, located midway between the old and renovated hospital wing. Tobacco products for use at designated areas include cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, chewing tobacco (snuff), pipe tobacco and e-cigarettes.

The Qikiqtani General Hospital will provide not only these designated areas for tobacco use and smoking, but will also educate and encourage tobacco cessation by providing a variety of supports. Nicotine replacement therapy will be provided to patients and staff who are interested in quitting, ensuring their hospital environment is safe and comfortable. Counselling will also be provided by cessation-trained health care professionals.
